Portraits and self portraits

I like this professional photo because it has leading lines that leads to the subject. I like the illusion that the photo creates when you look through it you see many triangles. There is a great contrast in colors, it you look at the background of the photo it gets darker as you look up the wall. The edges of the first triangle balances the photo.

This self portrait photo is nice because it nearly fills the hole frame. The subject is fully visible and is the first thing the viewer notices. I like how it's taken at an angle. It creates a certain flare to  the photo.

In my future photos I hope to accomplish more of the rules of photography and try to avoid mergers in order to take better photos.

Abandon Theme Parks

1. I would like to visit the amusement park in Lake Dolores, Newberry Springs, CA because it is a combination of an amusement park and a water park and a camp ground in a unexpected locale. It is supplied with water underground. I like the view and how the landscape looks like. I think I could take good pictures there.

2. Outer Space, The Sky, The Earth's mantle, The North Pole, The Great Wall of China.

 5. It would be interesting to take pictures in outer space because there is just so much information that is yet to be discovered and there's so many possibilities. I would like to take pictures of different stars. If I had the proper equipment and I was certified to do it.

6. I would take many change of clothes and food. The basic necessities. I would take my camera and my personal belongings.

Print Evaluation My First Print by Umar Kurugu

1.) Is anything in sharp focus?
Yes the objects that are black seem to be in sharp focus.
a.) Describe what is in focus and what is not.
The person I took a picture of and the plants around him are in focus, but the railing isn't in focus.
b.) If not in focus, state the cause.
The railing isn't the center of the photo and it is on the outskirts of the photo therefore it appears blurry.

2.) Is there good contrast? (Look for the blacks and whites in the photo)?
The black clothing of the person in the photo reading the newspaper along with the white tile of the hallway floor.
a.) If no, state the probable cause?

3.) Are all the rules followed? (Is the photo candid? Does the subject fill the frame? Does the photo contain action? Does it follow composition rules? Does it show "academics"?)
a.) If yes, explain what techniques were used and how you followed them in your photo.
b.) If no, how will you correct this next time? I will move in closer to take the photo of my subject in order to fill the frame.

What are they doing?
Working on a math problem

It is happening during sixth period.
Why are they doing this?
In order to strength their math skills.

1st sentence

Subject -- action verb (present tense) -- object -- how -- why -- when -- where.
Brandon is working on a Geometry assignment using a ruler and a calculator during his sixth period class.

The verb should be in present tense and the sentence should answer the 5Ws and 1H.

2nd sentence

Subject -- verb (past tense) -- object (describes background [context] of the situation shown in picture.)

The verb should be in past tense and the sentence should provide background info we couldn't get from looking at the sentence. Brandon worked on his Geometry assignment and is
waiting for his partner to finish.

Making a Black and White Print by Umar Kurugu

Making a Black and White print

1.) List the materials (equipment) necessary to make a black and white print:
Timers, Drying Cabinets,Tongs Or Spatula, Enlargers, Focusing Aids,Safe lights

2.) List the chemicals we might be using to make a print and where one would buy those chemicals:
developer, stop bath, fixer found at the Kodak website
3.) Summarize in one or two paragraphs the process from start to finish:


4.) Post a photo of the equipment necessary to make a black and white print:

1. emulsion-a light-sensitive coating on paper or film; consists of fine grains of silver bromide suspended in a gelatin.
2. aperture-is referred to the lens diaphragm opening inside a photographic lens.
3. masking easel-a frame, often with adjustable masks, used to hold photographic paper flat and control borders when printing enlargements.
4. exposure-is the total amount of light allowed to fall on the photographic medium.
5. safe light-A filtered light that's used in a darkroom to allow you to see while handling light sensitive material.
6. dodging-decreases the exposure for areas of the print that the photographer wishes to be lighter
7. burning-increases the exposure to areas of the print that should be darker.

Post Shoot Reflection

1. I think that the biggest challenge for me was trying to get students to seem like they were working. Many students didn't want there picture taken and didn't take me seriously. Another problem I had was with my balance so I had some pictures that were kind of shaky.
2. In one of my photos I had hard time focusing my photos and so it came out not as good as others could have.
3. In a couple of my photos I attempted to use the rule of thirds.
4. The next time I shoot photos I will sit in a chair and take my photos in order to prevent photos that lack in focus.

Ethics in Fashion and Photography

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
 As the photos changed more and more makeup was added to the model to cover up her imperfections. Also her eyes were enlarged using photoshop.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
Personally I don't think it is ethically acceptable for someone to change a person's appearance like that but, apparently society finds it a normal and OK thing to do.



3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
Yes I think it would be ethically wrong if they were to show these kinds of things to third world countries. It's hard enough that they have to live harsh lives day by day and these kinds of ideas would just add another burden on those people who are living harsh lives.


4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
I would agree with a small amount of makeup but the heaps of makeup plus the photoshop would just be unacceptable and is going overboard.


5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.
In fashion photography photos are mainly focused on model and the latest celebrity outbreaks, whereas the photography in photojournalism encompasses nature and objects of all kinds and different kinds of people.


6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each? The messages that the photos in the video give out affect how young people view what is ethical and what isn't ethical in society and in reality to an extent. Young people begin to believe that this is what defines beauty and if you aren't what it shows than you aren't beautiful.

Negatives Evaluation

1. From looking at my negative photos I think that eleven out of thirteen photos came out quite well.
2. I think two of my photos didn't come out too well because of bad positioning and under exposure to light.
3. I think the eighth photo that I took would come out best because among all of my photos the balance of light and dark are distributed very well and the shot looks crisp.
4. In my best negative some aspect of the focus the picture is there while I have many others in the background. The person that I have focused in the photo is in the center.

5. In my second photo I have an example of the rule of thirds because my photo takes up one third of the photo.

Photo Manipulation and ethics continued

A. I think this photo is most unethical because it show a father trying to grab is child from a ditch and then the next photo shows a man coming out of the ditch. I guess the one who altered it attempted to make it humorous. For this reason I believe these photos are unethical.
B. The photo that I find the least unethical is the photo that shows the pyramids of Giza. The reason why is because the pyramids were just altered to look closer together in order to fit on the magazine. I don't think it would offend many people.

Photo Manipulation and ethics

A. It showed instances when people had altered photos. One photo showed some missiles being shot in the air and the altered photo showed more missiles in it. There were only specific photos that were altered showing the same photo but making it seem like they were taken in different locations.
B. I believe that this type of photography is unethical because it creates generalization about people who may have nothing to do with a certain thought.

Drug Cartels in Mexico

I think that drug cartels in Mexico is becoming a huge problem. Many have been killed for the sake of the transporting of drugs. That I believe is very unjust. But there are many unjust things happening in our world today. "The cartels kill indiscriminately." I find this very interesting because terrorist in the middle east seem to be killing people indiscriminately. Except that they are claiming to do it in the name of religion and the drug cartel serial killers kill people because of their drug needs and their illegal business.

The photo that has blood on the passenger seat. The photographer took the picture in such a way that it made the blood of the victim appear in the center so that it would allow the viewer to get the severity of the situations face at Juarez. It is my favorite photo because it forces you to feel some guilt and sadness in your heart. The world is a dangerous scary place.

Processing Black and White photos

1)Materials necessary to process black and white film:

• A metal or plastic film tank
• Three dark plastic containers to hold chemistry
• Graduates (used to measure chemicals)
• A darkroom timer
• A can opener
• A room that is totally light proof (not even the slightest sliver of light should be visible).
• Developer (see other sidebar)
• Glacial Acetic Acid (optional, for Stop Bath)
• Fixer (Kodak Rapid Fixer with Hardener is highly recommended)
• Hypo Eliminator  

2) Chemicals that one would by and we might be using in the darkroom are:

• Chemical Manufacturer Specification sheets
• Place where you can mix liquids (Sink)
• Measuring Beakers or Graduates
• Very accurate thermometer, and possibly a method of Temperature control
• Stir sticks
• Funnels
• Maybe a water filter
• Storage Bottles
• Developer
• Stop Bath
• Fixer

3) In order to stop the development process a stop bath is used.

It neutralizes the effects of the developer. At this point the film is developed, however the image is not permanent, there are still unexposed silver-halides in the emulsion. If these particles are exposed to light, they will turn into silver quickly. The film has to be made permanent, this is done with a chemical fixer. The fixer attaches itself to the unexposed silver-halides, preventing them from reacting to the light. The final stop is to remove all traces of the chemicals in a wash step. If fixer is left on the film, it will eventually stain the image. There are additives, like Kodak Hypo Clearing Agent, which can speed up the wash process. After washing, the film must dry.

1. Contact sheet: a contact print, usually of all frames of a developed roll of negative print film, used as a proof print.

2. Agitation: Gently moving around development solution during film processing so pictures may be developed with fewer flaws.
3. Enlarger: an apparatus used for making projection prints, having a head for holding, illuminating, and projecting a film negative and a bed for holding a sheet of sensitized printing paper.
4. Developer:  a reducing agent or solution for developing a film or the like.
5. Stop Agent: a chemical that stops a process

6. Fixer:a chemical substance, as sodium thiosulfate, used to promote fixation.

What the pros are doing- Repitition

In the first photo the marine boats that are sailing back to shore create water lines that are repeated throughout the photo.

This next picture is on a plane with screens on head rests that show lisa simpson and there are many throughout the photo.

In this final photo a jet has a propeller that is spinning repeatedly and it is the focus of the image.

American Soldier

2)A. I think the most powerful image in the slide show is in the "signing up" chapter when Ian hugs his friends before he leaves for the army. It has a powerful emotion to it. Ian is crying he will not know if he will make it back alive to see his friends and family again.
 B. The sequence of the pictures from chapter to chapter create a feel of fear and hope.  It makes you think about the important things in life and what we take for granted.
C. The photos work together to tell the story about the experience that Ian Fisher went through from graduating high school and going on to the military.
3)A. present tense
B. The captions enhance the photo in such a way that it tells you what year it was and what is about to happen to Ian.
4)A. Ian Fisher is think about his not so hopeful future in Iraq as he is about to sign up while rehearsing the things for graduation.
5) A The videos give the the photos and extensive about of detail and understanding behind them when you watch the video.
B. Videos are better than photographs in that they explain to you what is going on rather that an individual having to make an inference or you having to give an opinion of what is going on.
C. Photos are better than photographs in that they allow a person to really think about what the picture is implying and the mood that it sets. It encourages you to use your critical thinking skills.

Funny Captions

]Pandorus is making his morning slide down a snowy slide at a Chinese zoo. "Weee!"says the panda as It's sliding on its stomach and it looks happy. "Better hurry before the guards see me!

Mr. Deed's work building is on fire. He is trying to find a way out so he looks to his  right and sees this sign.
As dumb as it sounds he does exactly what the picture shows to get out unharmed.

 Two cats sleeping on in a polka dot sleeping bag and the other in a pink sleeping bags. Cats don't sleep in sleeping bags. "Shh! can you keep the pictures to a minimum we're trying to get some shut eye!" Well it looks like the cats are sleeping well.

Marlboro Marine

2A. The photographer Luis Sinco was able to utilize and capture the pain and depression that Miller was going through. The dirt and sunlight that shine on his face capture the mood that he feels, being at the end of the tunnel with no light.
B. The effect and power of the multimedia was added in the sequence of photos that were shown also the amount of time it was shown.
3.A. I think that the most powerful image in the slide show is the last photo that is shown at the end. Where it shows Miller with a cigarette in his mouth with dirt on his face. The reason why I believe that is because it has the feeling that emanates from his face that reveals that he is deeply scared from the experience he had in Fallouja Iraq.
B. The sequence of photos that was most powerful is when Miller was on his bike the road near the cliff and he was think about driving off with the last shred of hopelessness.
C. Audio enhances a photo in such a way that it give you a deeper feel to the photo and it gives you an opportunity to make a connection with the photo based on your experience and how you feel.
D. The photos go together in order to make a series of events according to how the narrator feels and expresses his or herself.

This photo is inspiring because it encourages an individual to follow your dreams whether it is sports or music or anything you are interested in. It represents perseverance, determination, and hard work..

The photo is very bright and colorful.

I find this photo interesting because it shows good sportsmen ship and respect for each other.  

It shows that even after a competitive sport they are mature enough to be courteous to one another.

Great Black and White Photographers Part 3

I first noticed that William Klein's pictures were black and white. Another thing I noticed was that most if not all of his pictures were about famous people. I also chose his photos because the faces of the people that he took stood out from the rest of the picture

I see a famous boxer named Muhammad Ali pointing at the camera.
I smell defeat or disappointment.
I hear arguing, yelling and the throwing of objects.
I taste bitter hate and defeat.
I feel sympathy and concern.

I see a kid pointing a gun right into the camera lens.

I smell fear and death drawing near.

I hear the revolver in the gun moving back with the click sound

I taste the last breath of my life.

I feel scared about the last moment of my life and feel regret for the things I didn't do.

3) I would like to create a powerpoint with the photographer's photos that I have chosen. A slideshow of the photos I thought were interesting.

The Most Interesting Stuff

The photo "The Bridge to Adventure" is the most interesting to me because it shows people working together on a bridge. I believe team work creates success and this photo demonstrates that really well. It might be a type of community service activity. The photo was taken well and the angle is nice.

Action and Emotion

This is a photo of a man carrying a Guatemalan girl who is poor and needy. It shows action and emotion because the man is caring and comforting the girl. He is lending a helping hand out to her. He is volunteering and lending a helping hand out to those who are less fortunate than him.

The Story

The picture of the photo with the skeleton is an interesting photo. I believe it is about a skeletal structure of a species similar to the human who was wiped off the face of the earth and later dug up and discovered. It is being examined by a young student.

Hurricane Ike

Simplicity because it shows a woman crying after her relatives died due to the result of hurricane Ike.

 This photo struck me because this woman has lost a lot.
